2010 Application Guidelines & Checklist

Thank you for your interest in the O'Neill's National Puppetry Conference.  Please review this information carefully as the conference has a variety of programs and roles available to you for your artistic development. Please use this webpage to help you prepare your application.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 15, 2010
APPLICATION FEE: $30

~ Late applications will be received with a $55 application late fee ~

The fee for the entire eight-day conference is $950.
This includes tuition ($500), and all meals and housing ($450) at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut.

The cost for the 3-day Master Class Intensives is $400.
This includes tuition ($250), and all meals and housing ($150) at the O'Neill Theater Center.
The Intensives can be attended in conjunction with the Conference or separately.

3 Day Pre-Conference Intensive, June 9-11, 2010
This is a supplement to our main conference, and is strongly recommended for Emerging Artists.
You may choose one of the following options:

  • 3-day pre-conference intensive on mechanisms with Jim Kroupa
  • 3-day pre-conference intensive on manipulation with Ron Binion
  • 3-day pre-conference intensive on writing with Robert Smythe  (recommended for Emerging Artists)
  • 3-day pre-conference intensive on design:  character, set, and sound with Paul Andrejco, Miguel Romero, and Paul Rudolph

Week-long Conference, June 12-20, 2010
 This is the heart of the Puppetry Conference, and - with very few exceptions - all roles will participate in one of the following programs.  Please select your preference.
 You may choose one of the following options:

  • Staff Ensemble project with Richard Termine, Tyler Bunch, Miguel Romero, and others
  • Ensemble film project with Tim Lagasse and Martin Robinson
  • Marionette manipulation workshop with Philip Huber or building with Jim Rose
  • Emerging Artist project with Robert Smythe
  • Music workshop with Larry Siegel  (separate application process necessary)   

ROLES AVAILABLE:
There are three roles available to you at the conference.  You must select one.  Once you have decided which role you will apply for, please see the approriate section of Application Materials below.  It will give you a description of all the material you will need in order to apply.

  • Participant - This role is intended for first time attendees of the conference, as well as the more seasoned conference goer.  Participants will work on one of the projects above, as well as have the opportunity to develop a participant project.  If you have attended the conference in the past, you may apply to work only on your Participant Project. 
  • Emerging Artist - This role is intended for the more advanced participants, and allows the artist to more time and support to focus on the development of their project. 
  • Musician - This role is intended for skilled musicians who wish to explore collaboration with puppetry artists.  
            

UNIVERSAL APPLICATION MATERIALS
Required of ALL Applicants:

  1. Name and Contact Information:  Please use only one name in your application, and have a mailing address, an email address and a phone number ready.
  2. A Current Resume
  3. Letter of Reference: Be sure to have the letter writers Name, Title and Organization, and his/her email and phone number.
  4. Two Additional Reference:  No letter required, but you mus include name, title, organization, mailing address, email, and phone number - as well as a brief description of your relationship to the reference. 
  5. A Portfolio of Your Work:  this needn't be a proper professional portfolio, but some samples of your work. These include images, video and sound.  They can be submitted via email, or by including the URL (website address) in the online application.  Please also prepare and include brief summaries of your involvement in creating the materials you submit

PARTICIPANT APPLICATION MATERIALS:

  • If you have attended the conference previously and wish to work only on your Participant Project, you must submit a brief proposal of your project with the application: along with what is called for in the Universal Application Materials. 
            OR
  • If you haven't attended the conference before, or you have but still wish to work on the main conference projects, you need not prepare any materials beyond what is called for in the Universal Application Materials. 

EMERGING ARTIST APPLICATION MATERIALS:

  • You must submit a project proposal.
  • You have the option of bringing your own cast at a cost of $700.00/person.  Please be prepared to indicate how many cast members you plan on bringing.  Or, if you plan on working with the company assemble by the National Playwrights Conference and Flock Theater. 
            AND 
  • The Universal Application Materials. 

MUSICIAN APPLICATION MATERIALS:
Please submit the following in hard copy to: Lawrence Siegel, Resident Composer, 128 Paine Rd. Westmoreland, NH 03467.

  • Two CDs (or MP3) and scores.  Contrasting pieces are encouraged.
  • A current resume, and a short statement describing your interest and/or experience in writing for performing theater, and your vision of the collaborative artistic relationship
  • OPTIONAL: Include SASE if you would like materials returned.

This year we will again be using an Online Application. All of the submission materials listed above will be collected via email attachments and online links. Please have documents ready as Microsoft Word files or PDF's. Please have images ready as JPG's or GIF's. If you are unable to send us your application electronically, please contact The O'Neill Literary Office (see bottom of page) and they will be able to assist you with a mail-in application.
